2012 Call for Scores

The Dallas Festival of Modern Music is pleased to announce the 2012 Call For Scores. The Dallas Festival of Modern Music vigorously promotes the composition and prolific performance of contemporary music by encouraging compositions scored for the same instrumentation as well-established masterworks of the 20th and 21st century. In this way, further performances of new chamber works become more practically feasible to program, bringing these gems to a wider audience. To that end, selected composers will be invited to compose a new work that utilizes the Instrumentation found in the Schoenberg Chamber Symphony No. 1 or to submit a score already composed for one of these ensembles.

These works will be programmed for this year's Dallas Festival of Modern Music, will be rehearsed, performed, and recorded live by Ars Nova Dallas. Ars Nova Dallas is the festival chamber orchestra which is composed of some of the nation's most gifted contemporary music performers and conducted by festival Artistic Director Jordan Smith. Past festival composers have also had their compositions air on live television and radio broadcasts, an opportunity that may-at the festival's option-be extended to one or more of the winners.

From the submitted scores, a panel will select between two and five winners. Those submitting works which are not scored for the announced instrumentations will receive equal consideration to those submitting scores using the announced instrumentation and will be evaluated on the basis of artistic merit and the likelihood that a complete composition will be prepared in time. However, the winner will be expected to compose and deliver a finished work with ample time remaining for the musicians to prepare the work to the highest possible artistic standard.

No cash prize or travel money will be awarded as a result of being selected as a winner, and there is no age or nationality restriction. The winners will be invited to attend the 2012 Dallas Festival of Modern Music at his/her own expense and receive public recognition during the performances of their works, including the possibility of inclusion during various media events. Submitted materials will not be returned. Any additional questions should be directed to Executive Director Rachel Yoder at rachel@dallasmodernmusic.org
